When the test prints of the Necrontyr terrain pieces start rolling off the 3D printer in a few weeks' time, we'll have a lovely shiny battlemat to photograph them on!
A few weeks ago I ordered this 6x4' Robot City battlemat from US-based Frontline Gaming. They offer them as print-to-order designs in various colours on mousepad material, so they've got some real weight to them.
To my surprise, the mat turned up not in a roll-shaped package, but in a large box!
Unfolding the mat for the first time, this is how it looked. Those fold lines should disappear within a day or two.
Here's a close-up pic of a Necron warrior model, for some idea of scale. The green glow effect seeping through the floor is a cool design idea, and I'm looking forward to painting the new 3D printed terrain models to match!
The model below is a Genestealer cult goon, on a 32mm industrial-themed base. Even with two very different themes, it doesn't look totally out of place.
The mat also came with a 4' long zipped carry bag, which had this handy metal tag label attached for quick storage reference. A good idea, that.
Here's the whole mat neatly rolled in to the zip bag. Certainly beats the huge foam boards I've been using until now.
In all, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars for a well-thought out product. Durable product, innovative designs, and a reasonable price. If only the shipping cost to Japan wasn't so horribly expensive....
