First Necrontyr terrain piece is almost ready for you!

2018-04-23 by David

Very excited to see the first piece of terrain for the Necrontyr range come together smoothly! The last part is printing as we speak!

I'm keen to get this Landing Pad available for you guys to download and print too, so I'm rushing it a little by printing at 'Draft Quality' (0.2mm). It's a little rougher on the lines as the printer build its way up the walls, but nothing a light sandpaper can't smooth down.

So without further ado, here are some work-in-progress shots of the Necrontyr Landing Pad coming together...

£ The four corner pieces are printed in about 2 hours each, and come in at slightly above head height for a Necron warrior.

£ The four step pieces also print in slightly over 2 hours each, and complete the outer perimeter of the structure. You can also see the four support posts in the middle, which are carefully positioned to strengthen the landing pad surface and allow LED lights to be placed underneath.

Those steps are looking quite substantial, but that works with Necron-themed terrain, I think. Monumental and imposing, as it should be! Laughing

£ And here's the first of the surface quarters printing! I had some nervous moments watching this print come together, because it rather looked like everything had gone haywire!! It's like a mad ant-maze or something! But happily it all came together in the end.

£This is to show you that even before I've run sandpaper through the slots to neaten up those gaps, you can see the cut-out effect works! I can't wait to get this landing pad on the table with LEDs underneath!

£ Finally, for today, here's how that top quarter fits into the rest of the pad. The engravings at the edge came out very nice.

The corner piece, at 120mm x 120mm took up quite a bit of print time at three and a half hours (!), but I also set my slicer software (Cura) to iron out the top surface. That took an extra 90 minutes of the hot nozzle head going over the top one last time, but without any filament being extruded. It has the great effect of smoothing over the print lines, and giving a high-quality finish comparable to injection molded plastic kits. Well worth the extra time there!

So the last panel is now halfway done and will be hitting the paintdesk tonight, and then available for you to download in a couple of days!
